Though these three women were not the first African Americans to matriculate at William & Mary, their presence marked the first time black students were offered the same residential experience as their peers. They lived in Jefferson Hall among their white counterparts and were integrated into the campus community in a way that their predecessors were not. They participated in Convocation and wore their duc caps along with the rest of their freshmen class as they walked through the halls of Wren. They pursued their passions, majoring in English, Elementary Education, and Biology, respectively and joined clubs and organizations. In fact, Janet, Karen and Lynn were founding members of William & Mary’s Black Student Organization in 1969.
