Álvarez Román

Santiago Álvarez Román was born in Cuba, but studied in the United States. He returned to the island in the 1940's where he became a founding member of the ICAIC after the revolution. For many years he filmed and directed a series of short films that reflected on the national and international experience during that period for the Noticiero ICAIC. Recently, French cultural institutions have helped to restore them and UNESCO has classified them as works of cultural world heritage. He was famous for working with various media including news clips, photos, and other "found material" to create what has become known as the precursor to the modern video clip. He made films about U.S. and Cuban culture and was appointed to posts with the German National Academy of Arts and the Ministry of Cuban Culture. He has worked as a professor at the International School of Film and Television (EICTV) and has held a position in Cuban Parliament. He passed away in Havana in 1998 from complications due to Parkinson's disease.

Santiago Álvarez Román nació en Cuba pero hizo sus estudios en los Estados Unidos. Regresó a la isla en los años 1940 donde se fue uno los fundadores del ICAIC al triunfo de la revolución. Filmó y dirigió por muchos años, el Noticiero ICAIC, una suerte de cortos que abordaban la realidad nacional e internacional, y que recientemente restaurados con ayuda de instituciones culturales francesas han sido incluidos por la UNESCO como patrimonio cultural de la humanidad. Era famoso por su uso de “materiales encontrados” incluidos fotos y “clips” de noticias para crear videos que se consideran precursoras del “videoclip” moderna. El realizó filmes sobre las culturas estadounidenses y cubanas, y ha sido miembro de la Academia de Artes de Alemania y profesor de la Escuela Internacional de Cine y Televisión (EICTV) en San Antonio de los Baños. Trabajaba como consejero del Ministro de la Cultura Cubana y fue miembro del Parlamento Cubano hasta 1986. Santiago Álvarez Román falleció en la Habana en 1998 por la enfermedad de Parkinson.
