Humberto Solás was an influential Cuban director whose films include the highly acclaimed Lucia (1968), an epic that follows the stories of three Cuban women, one in the Cuban-American War, one in the turbulent 1930s, and one in the 1960s. With his project Oceáno, included in this exhibit, he sought to portray a homosexual couple on the island. Although he wasn't given the "go ahead" for this film, likely due to the subject matter, similar themes were later explored by Alea in Fresa y Chocolate.  Solás' life and work have been examined by Cuban documentary filmmaker Carlos Barba.
