Culture-Specific Pastiche

In contrast to regional parodies, these books are written to educate readers on cultural practices they might not be familiar with. The versions used in this exhibit are about Native communities, and contain glossaries to help the reader understand expressions and contexts. They are characterised by sincerity rather than levity, and the rhyming scheme sometimes makes way for the benefit of meter accuracy.

While these pastiches clearly recognize the original poem and Eurocentric Christmas practices, they argue that Native traditions are equally valid and important forms of celebration. Moreover, these examples show that the identity of the writer is important when it comes to the authenticity of the text.
